"Dimitri Mellos makes remarkable photographs that capture moments of transcendence, delight, confusion, humor, solitude, despair — sometimes all in the same frame. These densely packed images are teeming with mundane ordinary moments, unlikely juxtapositions, the interplay of shadows, silhouettes, and shafts of slanting urban light. His artful eye seems hyper-naturally tuned-in to saturated colors and morphing shapes; one can feel both his sense of whimsy and compassion as he takes us along his city streets." - Jim Casper, LensCulture Editor-in-Chief

Dimitri Mellos was born in Athens, Greece. Since 2005 he’s been living in New York City. He studied philosophy and psychology. As a child, he used to walk around with an old Kodak Instamatic camera (with no film loaded), pretending to be taking pictures. Many years later he rediscovered his passion for photography. His work has been exhibited in Greece, Barcelona, London, Berlin, New York, Miami, Santa Fe, and elsewhere, and is in public and private collections. He has received several awards for his work, including first place in the PX3 Awards, the International Photography Awards, and WPGA Pollux Awards, as well as 2nd place in CENTER’s 2011 Editor’s Choice awards and 1st runner-up in Blurb’s Photography Book Now 2011 contest. He also won the 1st prize in the Fine art e-book category in the 2012 Fotoweek DC contest, was a Finalist for the prestigious Fotovisura Grant and the Magnum Expression Award, has been three times a Finalist for the Renaissance Photography Prize, and was selected for American Photography 28 and 31. More recently, he was selected as a Juror's Pick for the 2016 Magnum Photography Awards.

John Szarkowski said of Garry Winogrand that “his ambition was not to make good pictures, but through photography to know life”. This statement perfectly describes Dimitri’s photographic aspirations as well.
